Safe Driving Tips to Avoid Auto Accidents

Safe Driving Tips to Avoid Auto Accidents

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Sharing New York’s traffic-laden streets and highways with other drivers can be a stressful experience. In order to protect yourself from reckless drivers and road hazards, it is important that you adopt the habits and principles of defensive driving. Even if you do become involved in an auto accident, abiding by the tips below can help you significantly minimize the severity of the wreck.

Some of the most overlooked safe driving tips include:

  • Don’t get boxed in – If you notice an aggressive motorist nearby, give them plenty of room to maneuver around you. Always leave yourself an “out” in case you need to suddenly change lanes or come to a full stop.
  • Eliminate distractions – Cell phones have been a major contributor to the epidemic of distracted driving. Seeing and responding to the unexpected actions of other drivers is the best way to avoid an accident, but this won’t be possible if you are texting or calling a friend. You should be constantly scanning the road ahead of you, behind you, and to both sides.
  • Get some sleep – According to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), over 56,000 car accidents are caused by drowsy drivers every year. Most accidents caused by fatigued drivers are serious and occur on high-speed roads. The NHTSA’s data indicates that young people between the ages of 16 to 29 are most at risk of falling asleep at the wheel.
  • Wear your seatbelt – It seems obvious, but around half of all car accident fatalities are the result of people not using seatbelts. For young drivers and passengers, the numbers are even more unsettling: 70% of fatal car accident victims between 13-15 years old were not wearing seat belts.

Defensive driving can save lives and prevent serious injuries. However, there are still many situations where safe drivers are caught off-guard by reckless motorists.
